Algemac's Coffee Shop to be Moved

Algemac's Coffee Shop, a Glendale institution since 1937, will be partially preserved in a plan to establish a new community center.  The restaurant was closed in 2005 to make way for a mixed housing and retail development on the site.

Angels Flight Reopening Delayed (Again)

The reopening of the landmark funicular railroad known as Angels Flight has been delayed once again.  Several dates have been given for the reopening, including summer 2007, but equipment installation and associated repairs have continued to push the date further out, leaving residents and tourists alike to scale the 153 steps up Bunker Hill on foot.

Brown Derby Sale Cut by $5 Million

Los Feliz Brown DerbyThe owners of the former Brown Derby Restaurant in Los Feliz, now the Derby Nightclub and Louise's Trattoria are attempting to sell the property, and have cut their sale price down from $20 million to $15 million in an effort to make it more attractive to potential buyers.  In 2005, Adler Realty unveiled a plan to demolish the historic Derby building and erect a new mixed-use luxury condominium development on the site.  The plans drew the ire of local residents and preservationists, who worked to halt the project.  Built in 1928 and once part of the famed Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant chain, the Derby was declared a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument in May 2006.

L.A. Ordinance to Limit Mansionization

The Los Angeles Planning & Land Use Committee has given their tentative approval to a citywide ordinance intended to limit people from building houses disproportionate to the lot size, more commonly referred to as mansionization.  If approved by the City Council, the ordinance will be the first of its kind for Los Angeles and will have a strong impact on the preservation of historic residences, as well as helping to retain the character of some of Los Angeles' older neighborhoods.

Pasadena Heritage Celebrates 30 Years
