According to the official Grapevine newsletter, the San Gabriel City Council is planning to demolish a charming part of Vincent Lugo Park known as Laguna de San Gabriel, a whimsical playground filled with colorful oversized cement creatures that act as slides, climbing structures and fodder for imaginative play.

Designed by one of Mexico City's School of Concrete Art top graduates Benjamin Dominguez, the park was originally constructed in 1964-65. Dominguez was at least 70 years old when he - and some of his nine sons - created the whimsical local. A well-known concrete artist master, Dominguez is recognized for similar playgrounds in Garden Grove, Beverly Hills, El Paso and Las Vegas.

On Saturday Dec. 2, the Friends of Laguna de San Gabriel will be holding a rally and collecting signatures from concerned citizens who wish to preserve the playground in its entirety. Dominguez family members will also be present to share their father's and grandfather's legacy. Supporters are invited to come down between 8 - 9 a.m. to help save the neighborhood park.

For more information, go to http://monsterpark.eloyzarate.com, or call (626) 308-3108. Vincent Lugo Park is located near Wells and Ramona Streets in San Gabriel, at 300 W. Wells Street, San Gabriel, CA 91776.
