The oldest surviving structure at the Van Nuys airport - an airplane hangar that some consider an early piece of aviation history - has been demolished. Featured at the end of "Casablanca," only the front facade has been saved. It was purchased by Jim Dunn, owner of the Airtel Plaza Hotel.
Built in 1928, the wooden building was the first structure at the Van Nuys airport, then called Metropolitan Airport. It was the last surviving original structure until it was torn own shortly before Christmas to make way for further airport development. During its 80 years of existence, it was used by old-time barnstormers, various movie shoots and the Holga Metal Products Corp.
Shortly before demolition, Jim Dunn purchased the facade with plans to move it to his Airtel Plaza Hotel property for display.
