Historic Landscapes Guide

The new Guidelines for Measured Drawings, Guidelines for Written History, and Guidelines for Large-Format Photography for the National Park Service's Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) are now online. As a result of growing interest and professionalism in the area, the National Park Service along with the Library of Congress and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) established HALS to recognize significant landscapes in the United States.

The program has steadily grown through over 40 field projects and a strong working relationship with ASLA and its chapters across the United States. HALS is a sister program to the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) established in 1934 to document the historic architecture of the United States, and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) established in 1969 to document sites of industrial and engineering significance.
