Lincoln Place & Housing
I came across another interesting link this week for those of you following the activities surrounding the Lincoln Place Garden Apartments in Venice. On August 16, KCRW's "Which Way, LA?" aired a panel discussion on "Lincoln Place and the Future of Affordable Housing."
Lincoln Place was built in 1950 to provide low-cost housing for veterans returning from World War II. Then, as now, there was a shortage of affordable places to live. Lincoln Place provided 795 units of needed affordable housing, while at the same time creating varied environments for tenants as well as open green spaces and meandering lawns that were shared by all. The question is, with Los Angeles' ever increasing population, is this combination of benefits possible today?
Listen to an archived recording of the panel discussion online at KCRW's website to find out what people think. The featured panelists include: Laura Burns, resident and active member of the Lincoln Place Tenant Association, Patti Shwayder, Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Communications at AIMCO, Mark Haefele, City Editor and Columnist for LA Alternative Press, and Carol Schatz, President and CEO of the Central City Association of Los Angeles, were the guest speakers.
