Funding Historic Preservation

The Federal Government supports historic preservation through a variety of funding sources and technical assistance programs. The National Park Service is a major source of support, but preservation assistance is also available, either directly or indirectly, from many other agencies. The Advisory Council for Historic Preservation has put together an online guide to assist the preservation community and general public in exploring the range of available preservation funding options.

The guide is a clearinghouse of information on Federal historic preservation support, and also touches upon State, tribal, local, and nonprofit funding sources. The Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credits, Community Development Block Grants, Section 108 Loans, TEA-21, and Save America's Treasures Grants are just a few of the many funding sources listed.

Individuals cannot directly apply to the Federal Government for most of these Federal funding programs. However, for worthy projects there are often ways to channel program funds through an eligible recipient. Such money generally goes to State, tribal, or local governments and non-profit organizations.

The guide provides website links for each referenced program. Following the links will provide visitors with information on how to ascertain the allocated funds. Most of the programs a specific program website, and are also listed in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. Both will provide detailed information on eligibility and application requirements.
